Wireless
Networks for Air Passenger Operations
Miles of hidden data cables connect the hundreds of check-in and
boarding computers visible at a typical airport. When the airport
needs to expand or remodel, much of this hardwired network must
be ripped from the walls and ceilings and re-installed. It is a
slow and costly process that is often repeated two or more times
during a single construction project.
A wireless approach would clearly be preferable—simply
transmit the needed data throughout the airport by radio. But
the security of wireless systems has always been suspect, and
following September 11, 2001, airport security became an overriding
issue. This fact has prevented many large-scale deployments of
wireless networking for passenger handling—until now.
ARINC has introduced a secure wireless network that meets the
concerns of both airlines and aviation authorities. The new system
is based on industry-standard equipment, using 128-bit data encryption
augmented by a dynamic WEP (wired equivalent privacy) algorithm
to protect the data. An advanced Cisco Systems Wireless Security
Suite provides robust security enhancement with centralized, user-based
authentication to guard against network intrusion.
The result is an intrusion-resistant network with data encryption
superior to electronic banking systems.
The ARINC Secure Wireless Network was first deployed in December
2002 at Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados. When the airport expanded, more than
100 check-in and boarding computers were using the network.
Six major airlines and aviation authorities approved the system,
and airport management—which initiated the wireless project—is
enthusiastic about its success. With wireless operation, all the
check-in and boarding counters can be moved as needed, wherever
there is a power outlet.
